7 Book and Tea Pairings

As summer comes to a close and the weather gets colder, people are trading reading on the beach with a pina colada for reading by the fireplace with a cup of tea.

Reading is an incredible way to unlock your imagination, and tea can do the same thing — with one sip, tea can transport you to a specific place or a feeling.

Since books and tea are so often grouped together, especially in the fall and wintertime, here are seven literary works and their perfect tea pairing. 

1. The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter + Chamomile Tea

Peter Rabbit is one of the most beloved children’s book characters who first appeared on our bookshelves in The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902. When Peter Rabbit gets a stomach ache after overstuffing himself a bit too much with the vegetables in Mr. McGregor’s garden, his mother, Mrs. Rabbit, “put him to bed, and made some chamomile tea,” ordering him to drink one tablespoon at bedtime.

Mrs. Rabbit was right on with her tea choice: Chamomile tea is actually great for stomach aches and other digestive issues. Known for its relaxing qualities,  it can also help you sleep and ease anxiety.

2. Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle + Lapsang Souchong

This famous British detective sure did love drinking tea. And although the author never mentions the exact variety Holmes liked to drink, the books take place during a time period where Lapsang Souchong tea was very popular. Rumour has it that this was Sherlock’s (along with Winston Churchill’s) go-to blend! Likely because Lapsang Souchong has a very smoky scent and flavour (are you picturing his infamous pipe?). It's also fabulous for cooking on a cold day – either as a hot beverage or as a smoky bbq rub on your favourite savoury foods.

3. Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden + Green Tea

The very first sentence of Memoirs of a Geisha mentions green tea. “Suppose that you and I were sitting in a quiet room overlooking a garden, chatting and sipping at our cups of green tea while we talked about something that had happened a long while ago.” Sets the scene beautifully, right? Some may say that green tea is the official beverage of Japan, where the book famously takes place.

4. The House at Pooh Corner by A.A. Milne + Honeybush Tea

In this children's novel, Winnie the Pooh and his furry friends Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore, to name a few, enjoy gathering for tea parties in the Hundred Acre Wood. However, when you think of Winnie the Pooh, tea probably isn’t the first edible symbol to come to mind. The plush yellow bear is primarily known for his love of honey, so how do you think he would feel about a honey tea? Honeybush tea is a sweet, herbal tea from South Africa that tastes just like honey, so there is no need to add a dollop to your cup. (But knowing Pooh, he would add the whole honeypot.)

5. The Chai Factor by Farah Heron + Chai Tea

This newer novel (by a Canadian author!) literally has chai in the title. It will fill you up with the warm and fuzzies, literally and figuratively, while you read and drink your chai tea with it. If you like modern romance novels with a splash of culture, it will definitely be your cup of tea.

6. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald + the Hangover Blend

Even if you don’t remember much of The Great Gatsby from your high school English class, you probably do remember that it was full of partying. Between Gatsby’s lavish soirees, they have to drink something besides champagne—and that’s tea! If you recall from the novel or film adaptation, Gatsby asks his friend Nick to invite his long-lost love Daisy to a tea party. Fitzgerald didn’t mention which type of tea was on the menu that day, but with all the partying that went down during the roaring 20s, we think our Hangover Blend is Gatsby’s perfect match (even if Daisy wasn’t).

7. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen + Dandelion Tea 

According to an NPR article, “It Is A Truth Universally Acknowledged That Jane Austen Pairs Well With Tea.” We can toast to that. Austen mentions tea in six of her novels, which makes sense as she was a tea-lover herself. 

Pride and Prejudice mentions tea 15 times throughout the book. Mrs. Bennet, Elizabeth’s mother, is always seen sipping on dandelion tea to soothe her mysterious "bilious complaint." So, channel your inner Mrs.Bennet and try our dandelion herb and root tea.
