Hojicha Milk Tea Latte Recipe

While a less well-known variation of green tea, Hojicha is often a favourite of those who have tasted it. Hojicha is a roasted Japanese green tea (“Hoji” means to roast, and “Cha” means tea) that’s actually not green at all due to the roasting process. While most Japanese teas are steamed, Hojicha has a reddish-brown colour which gives it a toasty profile and nutty flavour with hints of caramel throughout. With a softer, sweeter taste and lower caffeine levels than traditional green tea, brewing Hojicha into a latte with steamed milk can make for a delicious treat! With minimal preparation and a little extra equipment, you can elevate your homemade cup of tea to an expensive coffee shop beverage with this Hojicha milk tea latte recipe.

  1. Brew about 1/4 cup of strong Hojicha tea.We recommend placing the Hojicha in an infuser inside a cup or teapot and pouring the hot water over the leaves. Then allow the tea to steep for 3 minutes.
  2. Remove the infuser and strain the Hojicha.
  3. Stir your sweetener of choice into to tea.
  4. Heat the milk in a microwave, stovetop, or a milk steamer or foamer.
  5. When hot and thickened, pour the milk into the Hojicha tea until the rim of your cup is brimming with foam.
  6. Dust the top of your latte with cinnamon and enjoy!
