One of the most amazing things about tea is the sheer amount of possible flavours and styles. No matter where you travel, different countries and cultures will have their own customs surrounding tea preparation. When it comes to unique styles, few have become a worldwide sensation quite like Bubble Tea.

What is Bubble Tea and Where Did it Come From?

Bubble Tea (also known as Boba) is typically a sweet, refreshing, black tea-based drink with a milky consistency. It’s most easily identified by the delicious tapioca pearls that float at the bottom line, well, bubbles.

Originating in Taiwan in the 1980s, Bubble Tea quickly became popular throughout Asia before spreading to the rest of the world. Milk Tea was already a well-known drink in Taiwan at this time, and tapioca balls were popular desserts. During a hot summer, a savvy shop owner thought to combine the two elements and serve it cool.¹ It was a match made in tea heaven.

Since then, many variations have popped up. However, the traditional style of Bubble Tea has stood the test of time and is still wildly popular.

How to Make Your Own Bubble Tea At Home

Bubble Tea’s worldwide popularity means that it’s become quite easy to find. That said, Bubble Tea is a relatively simple, fun tea-based drink that you can make at home. Pick up these ingredients and follow these step-by-step instructions to try your hand at making your own.

Ingredients (1 serving)

For the Syrup

  • 3 parts water

  • 2 parts white sugar

  • 1 part brown sugar

For the Tapioca Pearls

  • 4 parts water

  • 1 part tapioca pearls

For the Tea

  • 1 cup of steeped black tea (cooled)

  • 1 cup of milk (you can easily substitute almond milk or soy milk)

  • 4 ice cubes

Instructions

Step One: Make the Sugar Syrup

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. In a saucepan, bring the water to a boil and add the sugars.

  3. Reduce the heat and simmer until the sugar crystals are dissolved.

  4. Remove from heat.

Step Two: Make the Tapioca Pearls

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Boil the water in a large pot. Add the pearls and boil for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally to make sure the pearls are not sticking to each other or to the pot.

  3. Turn off the heat and let the pearls steep in the water for another 30 minutes with the lid on.

  4. Drain the tapioca pearls and rinse with cold water to cool them down.

  5. Place them in the sugar syrup. Make sure that the pearls are covered and stir the pearls well.

Step Three: Make the Bubble Tea

  1. Gather the ingredients.

  2. Place 3 ounces of tapioca pearls in a large glass.

  3. In a cocktail shaker or a container, combine the tea, milk, and ice cubes. Shake or stir well

  4. Pour the shaken mixture into the glass over the tapioca pearls.
