With summer officially here, it’s time for all tea lovers to trade in their ceramic mugs for an ice-cold glass. Over a lifetime of tea drinking, we’ve picked up a few tips and tricks for making delicious, refreshing iced tea at home. We promise you’ll want to read on to learn our top recipes and tips for making the best iced tea you’ve ever made.

Tips for Making the Best Iced Tea at Home:

1. Use Fresh Tea

When you think iced tea, what comes to mind? A can of that super sugary stuff? Not here. The tea recipes featured below are about as authentic and healthy as you can get.

As a general rule of thumb, it’s good to make sure the tea you’re using is fresh, as tea can lose its flavour and become stale over time. If you’re interested in learning how to extend the flavour and freshness of tea through proper storage, check out our blog post on tea storage here.

2. Use Filtered Water

When you consider that most of your glass of iced tea is water, the water you use becomes pretty important in crafting the perfect blend.

Instantly upgrade your beverage by using filtered or spring water rather than tap water. Tap water often contains several minerals that can create off-flavours when they come in contact with compounds in the tea leaves. Filtered water, on the other hand, produces a more neutral tasting tea and allows the full flavour to shine through.

3. Get the Steep Just Right

At this stage, it’s important to know your personal preference and the science behind tea steeping. Do you like your tea extra strong? Then you should take this into account in your steeping time.

The longer you leave your tea to steep, more tannins (a chemical compound that gives the tea a more dry, bitter flavour) are released. You want to steep it long enough to release the flavours, but not too long that the more bitter tasting compounds dominate.

In general, there’s a lower risk of over-steeping herbal teas, because they have fewer tannins. Keep an eye out for black teas, though, and stick more strictly to package steeping directions.

4. Make it Fancy!

Okay, but how much more elevated do you feel when there’s a couple of pieces of real fruit or mint leaves in your drink? Bring the patio season home to you and make each of your iced teas extra special with some fun garnishes.

What should you garnish with? Try out:

  • Lemon slices for your Lime Fizz iced tea
  • A cinnamon stick for your iced Chai latte
  • Mango slices for your Mango Mango iced tea

5. Use Iced Tea Ice Cubes

When you’re finished steeping a big batch of your iced tea, try pouring some into an empty ice tray to save for later. This way, you’re not watering the drink down as the ice cubes melt, but adding more flavour to make it feel like a bottomless glass of iced tea.

Our Favourite Iced Tea Recipes to Make at Home:

1. Lime Fizz Iced Tea

A favourite among customers, the Lime Fizz blend has all the tartness of lemon and lime but is delicately balanced with sweeter hints of apple.

Ingredients:

  1. Lime Fizz blend (or you can swap for any other fruit blend)
  2. Frozen white lemonade concentrate (optional for sweetening)
  3. Ice cubes

Recipe:

  1. Bring 1 litre of filtered water to a boil.
  2. In a teapot, steep 10 teaspoons of Lime Fizz for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Fill a jug or container with ice cubes (the jug should hold 2 litres).
  4. Add 1-3 tablespoons of frozen white lemonade concentrate to sweeten the iced tea. This will add some zest and just enough sugar.
  5. Filter the leaves and pour the hot tea into the jug. Most of the ice will melt and that chills the tea.

2. Iced Chai Latte

You don’t have to venture out to your expensive coffee shop to enjoy this one. Unlike many of those coffee shop chains, this recipe uses real Chai, not Chai concentrate. Our Masala Chai blend is one of our most flavourful Chai blends, made with traditional Indian ingredients. It’s simply perfect for those who enjoy the full flavour of cardamom and black tea.

Ingredients:

  • Masala Chai blend
  • Honey
  • Any type of milk
  • Ice cubes

Recipe:

  1. In a large jar, steep 10 teaspoons of Masala Chai in roughly a litre of filtered water for 4 – 12 hours. Remember that the tea will become stronger the longer it steeps.
  2. Add 1/4 cup of honey and 1/4 cup of water to a small glass and microwave for 30 seconds.
  3. Stir honey and water together and allow to cool, then refrigerate until needed.
  4. Once the tea has steeped to your preference, remove the tea bags.
  5. Fill a glass with ice cubes, add 1 to 3 teaspoons of the honey syrup, pour in a cup of iced chai and top with your desired amount of milk.
  6. Stir to combine and taste. Add more honey syrup or milk, if desired.
