What is Shincha?

Shincha (新茶) is the first harvest of Japan’s most popular green tea: Sencha. Shincha is eagerly awaited due to its fresh and vibrant flavours. This tea has a naturally sweet taste and a smooth, refined flavour. Shincha literally translates to “new tea” because of its early harvest.

How is Shincha Different from Sencha?

Sencha is a type of Japanese tea, the most popular green tea in Japan. Shincha is the first harvest and the best quality pick of this prominent tea. Shincha is notably delicious but also known for its high content of the amino acid L-theanine and low caffeine content. Shincha is also higher in Vitamin C and catechin antioxidants than later picks of the same kind of Sencha tea.

What does Shincha look like?

The emerald green leaves of Shincha are prepared whole in hot water. The tea itself is a greenish, golden colour depending on the temperature of the water. The hotter the water, the more astringent the tea can become.

Tea So Good, It’s Celebrated

Did you know that in Japan entire ceremonies are dedicated to the country’s prominent teas? One of these teas, aside from matcha, is Sencha tea. Some groups organize formal art that surround the celebrated tea. The ceremony began in Japan in the 17th century by the founder of the Ōbaku school of Zen Buddhism. The ceremony became associated with the Ōbaku school and is still practiced today.

For centuries Japan has valued the first harvest of its most popular tea because well… it’s the best! Shincha is available in limited amounts outside of southern Japan.
